In search of a typical scandinavian style in graphic design, we decided to head north. We visited Sweden, Norway and Denmark to gather impressions of the lifestyle and design influences in each country and interviewed graphic designers about their lives and work.
From the information we collected we compiled our first book UP. As there was a certain typefamily standing out in the contemporary design of each country, it was used to represent each country within the book.
The open binding reflects the love for craftsmanship we encountered all over scandinavia from desingers as well as the average citizen.
We decided to print UP on Munken Lynx by Arctic paper when we visited Arctic Paper in their Munkedal plant and got to experience their sustainable production methods first hand.
We visited 11 cities traveled, over 4000 miles / 6500 km and met a lot of incredibly nice and welcoming people. We met with designers in all 3 countries, we hiked along wild streams and explored glaciers and discovered great design even in small towns in the mountains and along the fjords. We visited the the See Color! exhibition in Sweden and had the chance to experience the wonderful installations of James Turrell as part of the exhibition.
Our many conversations, the visual impression and the material we gathered left us deeply impressed and heavily influenced the design of the book.
